Viacom is a media conglomerate. In its' original incarnation, it began as CBS Films, Inc., which was a division of CBS.

Eventually Viacom gained independence from its' parent company CBS, and went on making many acquisitions, such as Paramount Pictures in 1994.

Ironically, by 2000, Viacom purchased its former parent company CBS, only to split from CBS again in 2005, resulting in the creation of two new companies: CBS Corporation and the new Viacom. On December 4, 2019, both companies merged together again and became ViacomCBS.
