Vegetables were the edible part of a plant. Although fruit and other types of plants could also be eaten, they were usually distinguished from vegetables, which didn't have a sweet taste as fruits usually did.
Nevertheless, some fruits were also considered vegetables as well; regardless of whether or not they had a sweet or savory flavor.
