Treason was a crime that involved actions taken against one's government.
As an example, if an American was to murder the President of the United States, that would be treason. Someone who commited treason was referred to as a traitor.

Ka-Do of the Kryptonian Science Council considered Jor-El a traitor for his idea to begin construction of Space Arks, because on Krypton space travel is illegal.
