Toto was once a chimp astronaut that was sent into outer space and got hit by cosmic rays. Superman rushes to save the capsule from destruction placing it back on the ground just as Toto suddenly grows right out of the space capsule, turning into a monster sized ape. He grabbed Lois Lane, taking an instant liking to her, in a similar way that King Kong liked the Fay Wray's character in the classic film. Superman tries to stop him and is faced with Kryptonite eye beams that the monster now has. But Superman shields himself with lead and defeats him.
Earth-RS88[]
On this Earth, Toto, or some other ape, appeared to be a giant gorilla rather than a chimpanzee.
At one point, circa 1988, he was climbing the Daily Planet building in Metropolis, and Superman flew out and grabbed him and flew him away to somewhere where he could do no harm.[2]

- The comic book version of Toto first appeared in Superman # 127 (February 1959). After he was enlarged, Lois began calling him "Titano," which is what he is now more commonly known as. He was apparently inspired by King Kong, from the famous 1933 film of the same name.
