A spanking was a form of punishment that usually involved a father or mother striking their child on the butt to inflict pain; usually with their own hand, belt or even a piece of wood, like a stick from a tree branch.
This was a widely practiced method for raising children, although some people felt that it was a form of child abuse. And no doubt, an excessive amount of spanking surely was abuse, not to mention bullying.

Fire told Ice that she had got spanked many times as a child, but she did whatever she could to not let her other childhood friends find out, because she felt that the only thing worse than getting a spanking, was when your friend knew that you did. Apparently she felt her embarrassment would have been worse than her physical pain.[2]
