Slavery was the ownership of sentient beings; which were generally used for manual labor.

Although slavery was commonly practiced in many places throughout Earth's history, it eventually became a subject of contraversy in most lands, and even illegal.

For example, after the American Civil War, slavery was outlawed in the United States of America.
