A scarecrow was a manniquin designed to have the appearance of a Human. Scarecrows were often placed near corn or other crops, and were meant to make crows too scared to approach.
Scarecrows were well-known, even in storybooks, such as the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, whom Professor Jonathan Crane borrowed his namesake.
