A refrigerator was a machine designed for storing and preserving perishable foods at an extremely low temperature, generally anywhere between ten below zero to forty degrees.
Often times milk, fruit, and even soda was placed in refrigerators to keep them at a low temperature, so that they would not go bad, or lose their good flavor, from getting too hot.
