Professor Dalton was a professor from Smallville.

He was well-known for an invention of his that was a machine that was capable of imperfectly duplicating matter.
He invented this device in his hometown of Smallville, during the 1950s, when Superboy was an active superhero.
Years later, Lex Luthor somehow obtained the information on how to construct one of his own, which he did, and he used the device to create an imperfect duplicate of Superman.[2]
