They were often cut up into diced bits and used as condiments for hot dogs and hamburgers and other types of sandwiches.

Wonder Dog loved having lots of bits of onions on his hot dog, along with lots of mustard.
While visiting the Seaside Amusement Park, Marvin White bought Wonder Dog a hot dog at a hot dog stand just the way he liked it.[3]
