Mutation was generally when a species transformed into another species; such as a man transforming into a monster, like Kirk Langstrom transforming into Man-Bat.
This might at times be due to evolution, or possibly exposure to an unstable and radioactive element. A person who experienced such as mutation was usually called a mutant.

In 1978, Aquaman was in the Mid-Pacific where he was exposed to the radiation of a deadly isotope, but rather than kill him, it mutated him into a prehistoric fish.[2]
