Mister Hyde was in reality the monstrous form of the Victorian gentleman named Doctor Jekyll, who transformed into the brutish Mister Hyde, his alternate personality; especially when he was under stress.
It was a serum that the Doctor developed during the 1880s that initially caused him to make the transformation, although over time, he no longer needed the serum.

Robin once compared the transformation of Matt Hagen into Clayface to the transformation of Jekyll into Hyde. It was then he made the statement: "Holy Jekyll and Hyde!"[1]

- Originally created by Robert Louis Stevenson for his 1886 novel, the Mister Hyde made his first canon DC Comics[2] appearance in Wow Comics # 4 (December 1941).[3]
