A meteoroid is a sand to boulder size particle of debris in outer space. The visible path of a meteoroid as it enters the atmosphere of a planet is called a meteor, or a shooting star or falling star. They are referred to as shooting and falling stars because of their resemblance to stars when burning in the atmosphere. A meteoroid that lands on the ground is called a meteorite.
