Measurement was done to determine the numerical attributes of a variety of a different things, whether it be the size of something; like it's height, weight or width, or the amount of energy within a certain thing, etc.
A clock for example, was used to measure time, a barometer was used to measure air pressure, and a thermometer was used to measure temperature. These were just a few devices that were invented for measurement purposes.
