Matches were tools used for starting a fire, used for a variety of purposes, such as lighting a cigar or tobacco pipe.
Most matches were made of either wood or stiff paper. One end of the stick was made of a special material that allowed it to ignite by friction against a suitable surface.

At a government science facility, when Astronaut Ellis was shrunk down to two inches tall, he was standing on a box of matches while being questioned by Colonel Wilcox.[2]
