A massage was when someone rubbed a person's body, usually with lotion or oil; especially to stimulate the muscles of the person that received the massage.
Most of the time one who received a massage was naked, although generally their private parts were covered with a towel or blanket. Sometimes massages were even given to a person while they were taking a bath.

When Travis Morgan first arrived in Skartaris after rescuing Tara, he was treated to a bath by a couple beautiful women. They cleansed him of all of the dried blood and grime from his body, and massaged him.[2]
Earth-SGC2C[]
When NBA superstar Latrell Sprewell met Fred Flintstone on a television marathon about cartoons, Sprewell introduced the audience to The Flintstones episode "The Swimming Pool", which featured a scene in which Betty Rubble and Wilma Flintstone were rubbing the backs of Barney Rubble and Fred Flintstone so as to get the water out of their lungs after they almost drowned in their swimming pool.
