A lock was a device that was used to keep a person from entering a building or somewhere else uninvited.

Locks were commonly used on safes, vaults, door and window latches of both vehicles and buildings.

Generally, they could be unlocked by a key or by other means, or they could be broken into, but this was usually considered a crime.

Also, in prisons, locks were used to keep the prisoners in their jail cells. Sometimes prisoners would escape; which would have been called a prison break.
