A knave was often described as a dishonest man, usually a criminal. The term was also used to describe a male that was employed as a domestic worker, especially in a kitchen.
The image of a knave was well-known for being used on the front of a Jack playing card. In fact, certain people such as Hi-Jack, Jack of Clubs and Jack of Hearts wore costumes like knaves.
