Hitchhiking was when a person stood on the side of a road and pointed their thumb in the direction they were traveling, in the hopes that someone in an automobile passing in that direction would pick them up and give them a ride to wherever it was they were going.
The activity was usually looked at in a negative light, due to the fact that people that picked up hitchhikers were strangers, and they could have been dangerous people.[2]
History[]
Earth 1956[]
In 1976, Robin referred to the incident in which mushroom spores from Krypton took a ride on a Kryptonite meteor as "Operation Hitchhiker."[3]
In 1977, a girl named Jody went hitchhiking, which led to her getting kidnapped by a man in a dark green car. The only reason she was rescued was because her friend Beth called the Wonder Twins.[4]
Sometime later that same year, a couple girls at a public pool were talking to each other about hitchhiking, but Aquaman overheard their conversation, and told them that it could be dangerous, and if they did decide to hitchhike, they were just asking for trouble. Thankfully, the girls were sensible and took the bus instead.[5]
