Professor Hecla was one of the few survivors of the wars of the planet Colu.[1]
He built Brainiac for the purpose of repopulating Colu by stealing Earth animal specimens, including humans.
History

When Brainiac first met Superman, he told him his name, and that he was built by Professor Hecla of the planet Mega.
This was surprising to Superman, who believed that no one on Mega had survived the atomic wars that had occurred on that planet.[2]
