A cat and a owl in a heart.[2]

The word heart referred to a hollow muscle that pumped blood throughout the circulatory system of most species' bodies.

The word could also be used to refer to the geographical center of a certain area. This was because the "heart", was located in the chest, or the "center" of the human body.

Because of this, the heart was often said to be the source of thought, reason and emotion. Technically the brain was what gave humans that function but this referred to the heart in a more metaphysical sense.
