Freedom was generally considered a foundational human right. For example, this meant that any free citizen was not a slave, but had the liberty to live their life as they chose.
In the context of incarceration, a prisoner that received freedom was released from prison, meaning they were set free. Also, if a person was to give a person something without expecting money in return, this would also be considered free.
