Krypto seemingly winking at the audience, almost as if he could see through the fourth wall.[1]
The fourth wall referred to an imaginary wall on the stage of a theater. The people in the audience were obviously able to "see through it," but the performers; or rather, the fictional characters that they played in the play, were generally not aware of it.
Still, sometimes a show at a theater may have been written in such a way that its' characters were very much aware that they were fictional characters, and they were able, at least at times, to "break the fourth wall," or see right through it as if they had x-ray vision.
Theories about the fourth wall[]
The super power theory[]
Some people that weren't fictional characters, but were in fact real people[2] at times seemed to be able to break the so-called fourth wall. This meant that they had superhuman senses that allowed them to sense things from beyond their own reality.
For example, although Superman was a real person on Earth 1956, Universe of Evil, the Scoobyverses, Earth-F and several other universes, there were certain worlds where he was a fictional character, such as Earth-11285 and another universe that Mister Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite visited that was unsettling to them.
As a result, certain metahumans or aliens with special enhanced senses might have had a certain "awareness", of things that were beyond this "wall," (more accurately described as a dimensional barrier) and thus they would've been able to see into worlds where they might have been considered fictional characters, and they would thus think that they really were fictional. Ambush Bug was a superhero that might be considered a good example of a person with the ability to see through the so-called "fourth wall," although it's equally possible that he was just completely insane, and therefore when he thought he saw through the fourth wall, what he was actually seeing was just mental images created from his own mental delusions.
The portal theory[]
Another theory related to the phenomenon of certain people being able to see through this so-called fourth wall is that maybe at certain times, portals to other dimensions might open up naturally at random, and allow certain people to briefly perceive them long enough for them to have a brief interaction with the people on the other side. Perhaps once the portals close, even the memory of the event becomes distorted and mostly forgotten, but perhaps only recalled at times, like when one experienced déjà vu.
History[]
Earth 1956[]
Once after Superboy and Krypto and saved the day and took off in flight, Krypto turned his head to his left, and winked his eye. It's possible that he was able to see through the fourth wall, after all, there was no one who seemed to be close enough to him to have seen him wink at them.[3]
