A sponge was a type of marine animal that was capable of absorbing water and other liquids, due to its' unique anatomy, which was covered in holes.
Because of this, sponges were often used as to make cleaning tools also called sponges, as they were able to absorb both soap and water with ease, and then when squeezed, the soap and water could come out, cleaning whatever the person using the sponge scrubs with it. One could even scrub oneself with a sponge.
