A beacon was something designed to draw attention to potential dangers in a certain location.

Wonder Woman located a beacon on a remote peak in the Andes with her invisible jet, which led her to a stairway that caused her to be trapped underground. Eventually Superman finds her and rescues her by uprooting a tree and lowering it to her and she grabbed hold of it and he pulled her out.
In 1979, Wonder Woman used her Justice League Emergency Beacon so that the Dynamic Duo would be able to track her to the planet Camelon.[2]
