Fear was an emotion brought upon by a feeling of danger to one's self or another.
For example, a mouse may fear being eaten by a cat, whereas a cat may fear a dog.
The Scarecrow has been described as a "master of fear."[2]
Irrational fears were generally brought on by certain mental illnesses. These were known as phobias.

History[]
Earth 1956[]
One of Batman's worst fears was Crime Alley, which for years, he avoided going to, since it was there that his parents were murdered. However, he was able to break free from this fear during an encounter with the Scarecrow, who created a Fear Transmitter that was designed solely for the purpose to make Batman relive that childhood memory.[3]
