A desk was a piece of furniture often used in a place of business, such as offices of ones' employment.
They were designed to hold papers and other things related to the job.

Director Wimple had a model of the American flag on his desk, and when Hank and Ben came to the Seismological Bureau building, Ben took the flag off of the desk and ran off, but Marvin took off after him and eventually Ben comes back and puts the flag back.[2]
When Batman and Robin entered the UltraTech complex, the first thing they saw was a secretary sitting at the front desk.[3]
