A commanding officer was an officer that was the highest ranking officer on hand.
They could be a captain, commander, lieutenant or any other type of officer.
Chain of command[]
Whenever a commanding officer was unavailable, the next in line to be the commanding officer was generally the first officer.
If the First Officer was also not on hand, then the officer with highest rank would then become the commanding officer.
