Cyborg and a robot playing a game of Chess.[1]

Chess was a classic board game, played on a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid.

It was one of the world's most popular games; often played in tournaments and even made popular as a video game called Video Chess.

Game objective[]

The game was played by two players, one that controlled an "army" of black pieces and the other white pieces.

The object of the game was to Checkmate the other player's king.

Chess pieces[]

The Chess pieces came in both black and white pieces. As mentioned, one player played with the black pieces while the other played using the white ones. They were as follows:

Knight to Queen four -- Check![8]

A Check was when a player's king is attacked. If the other player was unable to move from the position that puts him out of check, then he will be captured on the next turn, and the player that captured him will be the winner.

Checkmate[]

Checkmate was the final movement in the game. This meant that the king was captured.

History[]

Earth 1956[]

Aquaman and Wonder Woman were once playing a game of Chess in the Justice League Recreation Room. The winner was not determined, as their game was interrupted by a TroubAlert.[10]

The chess piece known as a "pawn" was often used in slang to refer to people that were manipulated by others into playing a role in doing evil. When King Timon first learned that he played a role in Darkseid's plans, he said "And to think that I was a pawn in this treacherous game."[11]

While Cyborg and Ronnie Raymond were at the Computer & Robot Exhibition, Cyborg played Chess with a robot and beat him at the game. He told Ronnie he what he loves about playing the game with robots was that they were such "good losers." Ronnie was very impressed with him for actually beating the robot's computer brain. Cyborg told him it was no big deal, because even though the robots were programmed to "make all the right moves, it's the sneaky moves that win the game."[12]

Checkmate, a government agency within Task Force X, uses the concept of Chess for their agency, which it is modeled after.
