Director Warner informs the Kents that he will have to run a background check.[1]

A background check was a type of investigation that involved checking a person's criminal history and financial records. Such practices were common among law enforcement and adoption agencies.

When Martha Kent expressed her desire to adopt the boy her and her husband Jonathan had found, the director of the orphanage told her that they carefully investigate all applicants. She asked him how long that would take, and he said not long, and that he'd call her when they were ready.

The background check was a process that they ended up skipping however, since the boy was too hard for them to handle, and they went ahead and let the Kents have the child.[2]
