Doctor Amadeus Arkham was the Gothamite who founded Arkham Asylum sometime during the early 20th century.
History[]
Earth-One[]
Amadeus Arkham was the son of Elizabeth Arkham, who was suffering from an incurable mental illness. He acted as her psychiatrist and was under her care in the Arkham mansion.
Over the years after his mother had died, he had the mansion converted into a hospital for the mentally ill, so that he could help other people with similar illnesses that his mother had, with the hope that they wouldn't have to suffer as she did.
After sometime however, his own wife and daughter were raped and murdered by one of his mentally ill patients.
This event becomes a turning point for Doctor Arkham, as this was what caused him to snap. He even cannibalized his own family in some sort of mad satanic ritual. Soon after, he electrocutes his family's murderer to death.
Overtime, his insanity became clear to the general public, and he became locked up in his own asylum.[1]
