An orphanage was a place to find children up for adoption.[1]

Adoption was the process of an adult assuming a parental role of a child or children.

Such children that are up for adoption were typically kept at places such as the Smallville Orphanage, or similar establishments.[2]

Generally, a background check was performed on the adult or adults desiring to adopt a child; something that usually took some time, although certain extreme measures have been known to cause such establishments to speed up the process.

For example, when the Kents told Director Warner of their desire to adopt a child, they were initially under the impression that it was going to be a lengthy wait. But due to the fact that the staff at the orphanage were experiencing difficulties with handling the baby, they decided to quickly release him into their care.[3]

After the deaths of John and Mary Grayson at Haly's Circus, in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne adopted their son Dick Grayson; taking him in as his ward.[4]
